Associate Technical Designer - Apparel


We are looking for a graduate from a fashion prgram with emphasis in technical design and patternmaking.  We'd like you to have one year of experience outside of internships who is eager to learn, has excellent time management,  is deadline driven, and who wants to be in technical design.  This position will support apparel but also cross train in luggage, bags and accessories. So you will work at both our 1st Ave and 4th Ave locations sometimes moving betwen both buildings in the same day. 


The Associate Technical Designer will report to the Technical Services Manager and will have frequent contact with vendors and employees throughout the organization.  This position is an integral part of the Production department and will be responsible for communicating clearly all necessary information to a wide variety of departments and vendors in order to produce a high quality garment for production and to our customer, plus other duties as assigned.  Must be an excellent team player, organized, and deadline driven. 





  • Support for Technical Service Department. This includes technical designers and patternmakers.  Working closely with other departments, including product development, design, production, and sample room.
  • Assist Senior Technical Designers to measure and prepare product from factory for fit sessions. Review all details, noting what is not correct.  Assist in fit sessions with live models or dress forms as needed for apparel. 
  • Assist technical designers in follow up from fittings with clear communication on changes to share between departments and factories for pattern, spec, and construction, using pattern diagrams, photos, or directly working with departments involved as needed.
  • Scheduling various meetings for department as needed, including fit sessions. This includes working with the modeling agencies to schedule fit models.
  • Keep track and order supplies specific to the Technical Service Department as needed.
  • Help to establish standards for construction and styles, and build a standards book for departments to reference. Send standard books out to factories as needed.
  • Ability to proactively trouble shoot and problem solve issues regarding development and production as needed in assisting Technical Service Department.
  • Responsible to place sales orders for all pre-production samples (PPS) and size runs with the planning department for all Filson factories and keeping track of delivery of samples to TD dept.
  • Work closely with domestic and off-shore factories as needed.
  • Work with freelance patternmakers and graders as needed. Assist as needed to review all incoming patterns from outside sources to ensure they are correct.
  • Follow current market trends, especially in regards to fit, construction, and styling to continue to grow within the role as a technical designer.



  • The right person for this position will be eager to learn more about the apparel business from the technical side. They will work well with others in helping to build and maintain a strong team environment within and across departments.
  • 1 to 3 years of experience in the apparel industry, preferably in outerwear, men’s and / or women’s.
  • Must know how to sew, and have working knowledge of patterns, construction and fit.
  • Gerber Accumark pattern system or experience helpful but not necessary, will train if needed.
  • Experience with Yunique PLM system helpful, but not necessary, will train.
  • Strong time management and organizational skills to meet priorities and deadlines in a timely manner.
  • College degree from fashion program with technical/ patternmaking emphasis.
  • Illustrator, Microsoft Office, and Excel is a must.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Ability to work in a multi-cultural environment.
  • Excellent support person for the Technical Service Department. Must be team player.
